Mary Heuglin, a breast cancer survivor of 12 years, knows the difference it makes when you have a doctor who really listens to your story. Though Mary had a mastectomy, she has lived with a high risk of cancer recurrence since, and she’s needed continued care to help prevent that recurrence.
When Mary found two nodules on her mastectomy scar in 2022, she knew she had to take action once again to prevent the disease that her sister passed away from around the age Mary is now.
“I wanted a surgeon who could take care of it and that I could trust and feel comfortable with, but also who was more in tune with what was wrong with me than just a typical general surgeon,” Mary says. “I wanted somebody who could give me results fast. My last biopsy took three months to get my results. But this one came back within three to four days, so I needed that assurance.
“Dr. Bailey knew my history. He knew all about other nodules that had been found and the biopsy results I had before. He knew all this. He knew about my sister who had passed from it about my age. And he was very comfortable, very professional, and very personable.”
Dr. Bailey has practiced with Clark General Surgery since 2002, performing a wide range of surgeries to treat conditions such as breast or colon cancer, hernias, gallbladder removal, and skin lesions.
“When somebody comes to me with a problem, we’re trying to give a precise diagnosis, figure out what they need, and then take care of it,” Dr. Bailey says. “I just try and do the best I can and treat the folks as good as I can. I really care about results and want to do the best job possible.
“Mary was very knowledgeable about her medical condition. She was articulate and she was very nice and pleasant to work with.”
Mary says she had a good experience with the support staff at Clark General Surgery and at Clark Memorial Hospital, where her surgery was performed.
“The people here are fantastic,” she says. “I couldn’t have been any happier or more comfortable around strangers. They didn't make me feel like I was a stranger to them. And I feel great since my surgery. I haven’t had any problems. I’m good to go.
“I have to travel about an hour to get here one way, but it’s been well worth it. I'd just like to thank Dr. Bailey for all he's done for me.”
